Jannette Stoll smiles as she opens a clock she received to celebrate her 40 years of service at the Seaforth Manor. After 40 years working as a personal support worker at the Seaforth Manor, Jannette Stoll says she’s thinking of retiring, but she’s not sure she can give up the job.

“I’ve just enjoyed it here so much, both the staff and the residents. I wanted to stay until I reached 40 years but then I thought I’d stay a little longer. I’d like retirement to be soon but I know I’d miss the residents so much,” she laughs.

Stoll, who was honoured on her 40th anniversary at the Manor on Jan. 9, says she applied to three places when she moved to Seaforth at age 18 as a young bride. Of Kilbarchan Nursing Home, the Seaforth Manor and the Genesco shoe factory, she chose the job offered at the Seaforth Manor.

“I guess I made the right choice because the other two are closed now,” she says.
Hired originally as a nurse’s aide, Stoll has since received training as a personal support worker and says she still loves the job of looking after residents and being a part of their daily lives.

“I like caring for people and I try to make them laugh – that’s what makes my day,” she says, adding that giving everyone an ear-to-ear grin is usually enough to brighten their day.
Stoll says she’s always been a good listener, an attribute that she says has helped her determine the best way to care for each resident.

Compliance with AODA

In 2005, The Ontario Government took a step toward building a more accessible province when it passed the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).  As of January 1, 2012, the AODA Act legally requires all organizations that provide goods or services either directly to the public or to other organizations in Ontario and that have one or more employees to provide accessible customer service to persons of all ability levels.
Documents are available regarding our Homes and AODA by contacting the General Manager.

At 92, Deirdre O’Reilly has started a new relationship.

With an iPad she calls Paddy, the Seaforth Manor resident has her day scheduled around her new technology, shopping at the apps store, downloading new games and chatting around the world with her children and grandchildren through Skype or Facetime, a video calling program offered between iPads and iPods.

“It’s wonderful. I got it this summer and I’m addicted,” she says.

“She’s totally in love with Paddy,” says her daughter Maura Simpson.

Simpson says her mom’s iPad usage has improved her life so much that Simpson is now planning to approach nursing homes throughout Huron County with the offer to teach seniors how to use an iPad.

“The most important thing is the changes it has brought into my mother’s life,” says Maura. “She’s no longer grim and depressed – she’s happy and eating well and engaged. I’m so proud of my mother. She’s opening up her mind.”

We recommend the second logo, below.
